The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) is the system through which the U.S. government will track, control and process all imported and exported goods. The AESDirect portal within the ACE system is a joint venture between is a joint venture between U.S. Customs & Boarder Protection, Foreign Trade Division of the Bureau of the Census (Commerce), the Bureau of Industry and Security (Commerce), the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (State), and other Federal agencies. It is the electronic means by which the exporter prepares the Electronic Export Information (EEI) that is reported to the various agencies. The EEI is meant to help companies ensure export compliance and reduce costs.   As an exporter there are regulations surrounding when an EEI filing is required, to ensure compliance and avoid financial penalties it is wise to know what is required as part of export process. The Internal Transaction Number (ITN) is issued when AES has received the data and has approved the shipment for export. This ITN is to be recorded on export bills of lading and needs to be retained by the exporter.

The Canadian Automated Export Declaration (CAED) is a similar premise launched by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), where the exporter has the ability to declare exports to customs electronically.  The result is what is known as a B13A Export Declaration and provides the exporter with a Proof of Report number that is used for outgoing shipments. As with all governing agencies there are regulations surrounding when goods are to be reported on an export declaration depending on value, controls, and country of destination.
